Treated and clarity-enhanced diamonds
What fracture filling, laser drilling and HPHT colour treatment are, how they are disclosed, and what they mean for price and care.
Some diamonds are treated after cutting to make them look better. A treatment is not a defect, but it changes the value and sometimes how the stone must be cared for – so it must always be disclosed.
Clarity enhancement (fracture filling)
A glass-like filler is put into fine fractures that reach the surface, so they become harder to see. Filled diamonds cost much less than untreated stones of the same look. Avoid very high heat (for example during repairs) and ultrasonic cleaners; tell the jeweller about the treatment.
Laser drilling
A tiny laser channel reaches a dark inclusion, which is then bleached. The channel is visible under magnification.
Colour treatments
High pressure, high temperature (HPHT) or irradiation can change the colour of a diamond. Many lab-grown diamonds receive a post-growth treatment; the grading report states it.
How we disclose it
Every treated diamond is marked "treated" on the product page, in the cart, on the invoice and on its grading report. We never mix treated and untreated stones.
